Green Day was one of two acts who received the Landmark Award at the 2024 iHeartRadio Music Awards on Monday, 1 April. Along with TLC, the group featuring Billie Joe Armstrong, Tré Cool and Mike Dirnt was celebrated at the awards ceremony at The Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles with the special, honorary award.

After receiving a thoughtful introduction from fellow alt star Avril Lavigne, who cited the group as one of her favorites, the punk trio took the stage for a performance. The Californian band played a medley of two songs, showing just how far they’ve come and how true they’ve stayed to their riotous, youthful sound.

Billie Joe Armstrong and company kicked off their set with a rocking performance of “Bobby Sox,” a bisexual, pop-punk anthem off their latest album Saviors. Armstrong, 52, wore a hot pink suit while his bandmates were dressed in black and the stage was engulfed in pink imagery.

Green Day then broke into their 1994 hit Basket Case off their seminal album Dookie, which celebrated its 30th anniversary in February. As the stage turned green and the rockers broke into the song’s iconic guitars, the audience roared and continued to cheer as Armstrong walked toward the end of the stage to shred at the end.

After their set, Lavigne, 39, passed off the group’s trophy to Armstrong, who appeared overjoyed. Green Day was also nominated for one award at the event. They received a nod for alternative artist of the year, competing with blink-182, Fall Out Boy, Foo Fighters and Paramore in the category.

Green Day’s recognition at the 2024 iHeartRadio Music Awards comes amid a major comeback year for the group. In January, the rockers released their 14th studio album, Saviors, which debuted within the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 chart.

The alt-rock icons are also currently celebrating two milestone anniversaries: the 30th anniversary of Dookie and the 20th anniversary of the fan-favorite record American Idiot. The Grammy winners will set out on a massive tour across North America this summer to commemorate the LPs.

Elsewhere at the 2024 iHeartRadio Music Awards, Green Day’s fellow Landmark Award honorees TLC also played a nostalgic set, and hitmakers like Justin Timberlake, Jelly Roll, Lainey Wilson and Tate McRae filled out the bill.

A handful of other music legends were celebrated with coveted awards as well. Beyoncé was honored with the esteemed Innovator Award, recognizing her influence on pop culture, creative risks and her skill to “successfully transform [her] music,” according to a press release.

Cher received the Icon Award, due to her contributions to pop culture that span seven decades.
