Pet Shop Boys are challenging Taylor Swift for the top spot in the UK album chart. The pop greats are currently around 1,000 chart units behind Swift’s massive-selling The Tortured Poets Department with their new album, Nonetheless.

The news comes after Neil Tennant attracted criticism from Swift fans for suggesting that despite her success, her music doesn’t have the same reach as her fame. In a Guardian Live event, Tennant asked, “What is Taylor Swift’s Billie Jean? Shake It Off? I listened to that the other day and it is not Billie Jean, is it?” Tennant added that, “the one disappointing thing is the music, not the lyrics”.

“To have a successful pop career now you have to have a series of relationships, which are amazing and then break up tragically,” he went on. “In the world of pop, people don’t write songs like Karma Chameleon anymore.”

Nonetheless is the duo’s first album since 2020’s Hotspot. It sees them work with James Ford on production for the first time.

“We wanted this album to be a celebration of the unique and diverse emotions that make us human,” Pet Shop Boys said in a statement. “From the more dance-orientated tracks to the raw poignancy of the introspective ballads, with their beautiful string arrangements, each track tells a story and contributes to the overall narrative of the album.”

They added: “We’re very excited to release this new album. Its 10 tracks are the strongest indicators of where we are today. Like much of our music it’s very reflective. It was great to work with James Ford, who we think has brought new elements to our music.
