Sheeran played a surprise opening set before The Darkness’ headline show at the Roundhouse in Camden, London last Saturday (9 December). Sheeran later returned to the stage during The Darkness’ set to join them on their classic Love Is Only A Feeling.

Now The Darkness have posted a video showing Sheeran and Hawkins playing the song together backstage on acoustic guitars. The post reads, “It was fantastic. Here is a their first rehearsal together backstage in the dressing room before the show starts! The full official live performance will be released this weekend!”

During Sheeran’s support slot, he told the crowd that it had been his dream to play with the flamboyant rockers ever since he bought their debut album, Permission To Land, aged 13. “It was always my ambition to be onstage with them one day,” Sheeran said. “Check me out on MySpace… I hope you like it… If you don’t, it’s only half an hour.”

“The crowd started off with their fingers in their ears,” The Darkness guitarist Dan Hawkins told Guitar World about his band’s opening slot. “But by the end they had their hands in the air. It was a massive success, actually.”

The Darkness have a long relationship with Sheeran, having previously opened for him on the UK leg of his 2019 Divide tour”, along with James Bay and Zara Larsson.

Sheeran’s love of rock and heavy metal is well established, having recently collaborated with British extreme metallers Cradle Of Filth on a song that will reportedly be released for charity and spoken about his early love of Slipknot in interviews.
