David Bowie fans will soon be able to watch the documentary Moonage Daydream without leaving the comfort of their own homes. The doc, from Oscar and Emmy-nominated director Brett Morgen, will debut on HBO Saturday, 29 April at 8 pm and will also stream on HBO Max.

Moonage Daydream focuses on Bowie’s catalog from 1970 to 1977, with Morgan having access to unseen footage of Bowie, as well as art and poetry from his personal collection. The movie was described as “a sublime kaleidoscopic experiential cinematic odyssey that explores Bowie’s creative, spiritual, and philosophical journey.”

The film is guided by Bowie’s narration with long-time collaborator and friend Tony Visconti serving as the film’s music producer.

Fred Casimir, EVP, global repertoire, said: “Moonage Daydream elevates the art of the music documentary to a new level. Brett Morgen doesn’t merely depict Bowie and his music, he embodies it visually to create a new immersive experience. It is great to see that such a creative achievement can also be a commercial success.”

Moonage Daydream arrived on the heels of several other high-profile BMG film releases, including the first ever, career-spanning documentary on metal icon Ronnie James Dio, Dio: Dreamers Never Die. The film premiered at the SXSW Film Festival in March and made its worldwide theatrical debut in the autumn 2022.

The film, which screened during the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, received high praise from critics and was nominated for five Critics Choice Awards, winning for Best Editing. It also earned a BAFTA Best Documentary nomination. In December 2022, it was also hailed as the biggest-grossing documentary of 2022 in any category.

According to figures produced by Box Office Mojo, the film had then grossed more than $12.2m, just over eight times the box office gross of the number two documentary 2000 Mules. A third of the box office revenue was from the US, with the remainder from international cinemas.
