Brit Awards 2021: Dua Lipa, Arlo Parks and Celeste Among Nominees
The Brit Awards have revealed the list of nominees for 2021 and, for the first time in the history of the Brits, the British Album category features four female nominees (out of a possible five), with Dua Lipa, Arlo Parks, Celeste and Jessie Ware going up against J Hus. In 2020 the category featured no women. This year the Brits have made a conscious effort to address the balance, with 10 British female artists recognised across 25 slots in mixed-gender Brit categories, where last year only one – Mabel – featured.
Arlo Parks, Dua Lipa, Celeste, Joel Corry and Young T & Bugsey all have three nominations each across the awards. Dua Lipa previously won Best Breakthrough Act and British Female Solo Artist in 2018, as well as British Single in 2019 for One Kiss with Calvin Harris.
Celeste won the critics’ choice award in 2020, which this year was given to Griff.
Arlo Parks however, released her debut album, Collapsed In Sunbeams earlier this year on the indie label Transgressive and this marks her first appearance at the Brits. Speaking about her nomination she said: “To be nominated for three Brit awards at 20-years-old as an independent artist is something that exceeds my wildest dreams. I genuinely don’t have the words to describe how grateful I am. This year has been difficult to say the least but art has been holding us together in some way, and I’m excited to be part of this celebration of British music.”
The Brit awards will take place on 11 May, with the original February date moved due to the ongoing pandemic. Comedian Jack Whitehall will return as host for the fourth year running and Dua Lipa and Griff will both be performing, with other acts to be confirmed.
