Prince Previously Unheard Tracks ‘Darkside’ And ‘Daddy Pop (12″ Mix)’ Shared
The previously unheard Prince tracks Darkside and Daddy Pop (12″ Mix) have been shared. Both tracks are taken from the upcoming expanded reissue of Prince & The New Power Generation’s 1991 classic Diamonds And Pearls, available on 27 October.
Recorded in Japan while on the Nude Tour in 1990, Darkside is a stunning look into Prince’s creative process, and features him directing New Power Generation bassist Levi Seacer, Jr. and drummer Michael Bland into a bruising instrumental, complete with searing lead guitar from Prince himself. This raw and aggressive track provides a unique view into what it was like working in the studio with Prince – and emphasizes his ability to craft songs in real-time from the ground up.
“Darkside” is accompanied by an unreleased 12” version of “Daddy Pop” that appears closer to a full version of the song before it was edited and placed on the original Diamonds And Pearls album. This extended variation of the track contains elements that Prince would sample in some of his later work.
In addition to the newly unearthed music and footage, the second episode of an official multi-part podcast series on the creation and legacy of Diamonds And Pearls is now out. Hosted and produced by author and broadcaster Andrea Swensson, the podcast includes the memories and insights from every member of that era’s New Power Generation and examines the process that led to the album’s creation, and its enduring impact on Prince’s legacy.
The upcoming expanded reissue of Diamonds And Pearls will feature 47 previously unreleased audio tracks and over two hours of live filmed concert footage in high definition, a 120-page hardback book that features previously unseen photos by Prince’s photographer Randee St Nicholas, and more in addition to the remastered album itself. Featuring an uplifting blend of hip-hop, dance, gospel, and pop, Diamonds And Pearls represents a turning point in Prince’s career where he connected his past influences to the present, an approach that brought him to the top of the charts once again.
Diamonds And Pearls will be reissued on 27 October in the following formats:
• Super Deluxe Edition (7CD+Blu-ray/12LP+Blu-ray/audio-only download and streaming)
• Deluxe Edition (2CD/4LP 180g vinyl)
