The singer wrote on the news page of her official site, “A billion streams! I have an image of a river that suddenly floods and becomes many, many tributaries – a billion streams – on their way to the sea. Each one of these streams is one of you…
“Thank you! Thank you so much for sending this song on such an impossibly astonishing journey.

It is the first of her songs to hit the landmark total and it becomes the first song by a female artist released in the 80s to reach one billion streams. Only 10 other songs from the decade have hit the total so far.
Spotify marked the occasion by adding a photograph of Bush to the header of their “Billions Club” playlist, which features the 400+ songs to have achieved the total.
When the Netflix show Stranger Things used Running Up That Hill in a pivotal scene in early June 2022 there was a 8,700% increase globally in streams of the song on Spotify. The following week saw the song rise to No 1 in the Spotify chart globally, with 57 million+ streams in one week alone and averaging over 8 million streams a day. It meant that the song is among the All Time Top 20 most streamed songs ever in a single week on Spotify. And Running Up That Hill continues to achieve almost 1 million daily streams to this day, according to Kate Bush News.
Bush was recently in the news after it was announced that she will be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on 3 November. Following the announcement, Bush shared a statement on her website reflecting on the honour. “I have to admit I’m completely shocked at the news of being inducted into the Hall of Fame!” she wrote. “It’s something I just never thought would happen.” Bush added: “Thank you so much to everyone who voted for me. It means a great deal that you would think of me. It’s such a huge honour. Now as part of the initiation ceremony I get to find out about the secret handshake… there is one, right?”
