In a statement on Houdini’s initial release, Dua Lipa said that it, “embodies that 4 a.m. feeling when the night is coming to a close and you’re a bit sweaty, but you just don’t want the party to end.”
“This track represents the most light and freeing parts of my singledom,” she added. “Houdini is very tongue in cheek, exploring the idea of whether someone is really worth my while or if I’ll ghost them in the end. You never know where something may take you, that’s the beauty of being open to whatever life throws your way. Im looking forward to sharing that feeling of defiant bliss with my fans.”
Lipa has been suggesting a change of direction for her next album in recent months. Back in August 2023, the singer hinted at a new sound in a new interview with The New York Times Style Magazine.
The singer said that the process of making her third album has been “insular and exciting” and suggested that the album will be influenced by 70s psychedelia, she also suggested that Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker may be on board. “You have no idea what the reaction is going to be once it’s out, so there’s this nervous feeling,” she added.
She has been nominated for Grammys for Song of the Year and Best Song Written for Visual Media for Dance The Night from the Barbie soundtrack. The ceremony takes place on 4 February.
She gave The Hollywood Reporter’s Award Chatter podcast the lowdown, “I got a text from a friend who was like, ‘Did you know that you just got nominated for two Grammys for Dance The Night?’ I was already on such a high because I had just released my new single, Houdini, and that was just absolutely flying and then I get this news and I was just absolutely in a massive whirlwind, I just couldn’t believe what I was hearing.”
She added, “I was just so happy to be nominated, especially for a song that means so much to me. I just feel like it’s such a big part of me.”
