The singer reflected on her early days and the process of discovering who she was as an artist, “It took me a little bit of time to find my feet and figure out who I was as an artist, you know, creatively. It was a step-by-step process. As an artist, as you evolve and you practise your craft—the more you spend time really honing things—the more comfortable and confident you are. And that’s how I felt with [Future Nostalgia].”

Dua’s latest album, Future Nostalgia, was a pop phenomenon, but it was released while the world was locked down, thanks to the Covid-19 pandemic. It was only last year that she was able to take the album on tour, a journey that is still ongoing with her current huge dates in South America. She spoke of the experience of touring the album, “I get to see it take on a whole new lease on life. Once I’ve sung the first line of the first song, there’s a feeling of almost being invincible, of joining forces with the music… and just having fun.”

Recently Dua has spoken out about political issues, something that is important to her, “As a society, around the world, we’re really taking ten steps back. Freedom, especially as a woman, means to be able to take things into your own hands, to have control over the things that you believe in,” she says. “To really have a voice.” This is a really important time to speak up about things that are important to us,” she says. “And that’s why it’s important for me, with my platform, to do that as much as I can.”

And Dua revealed that writing is progressing well on her new material, “As I’m writing my new album, I feel even more liberated in a completely different way,” she says. “And even more in control than I thought.”
