Ed Sheeran has shared his first new recording in nearly two years, with his new single, Afterglow.

Sheeran took time away to focus on being a father, after his wife gave birth to their baby girl, Lyra Antarctica Seaborn Sheeran, which he announced on the 1st September this year. In an Instagram post on Christmas Eve 2019, Ed Sheeran wrote, “Hello all. Gonna go on another break again. The Divide era and tour changed my life in so many ways, but now it’s all over it’s time to go out and see some more of the world. I’ve been a bit non-stop since 2017 so I’m just gonna take a breather to travel, write and read. I’ll be off all social media until it is time to come back. To my family and my friends, see ya when I see ya – and to my fans, thank you for always being amazing, I promise to be back when the time is right and I’ve lived a little more to actually have something to write about.”

The star’s last release was the album No 6 Collaborations Project, released in July 2019 and featuring a variety of guest artists including Dave, Eminem, Stormzy and Cardi B.

Sheeran teased the news of a new song yesterday (20th December) with a Jackson Pollock-style artwork and captioned it, “11am GMT tomorrow. A Christmas present.” But today he told fans it was a one-off single, stating “…Afterglow is a song I wrote last year that I wanted to release for you. It’s not the first single from the next album, it’s just a song I love, and hope you love too. Enjoy! Have a safe and happy festive break and New Year’s. Back to dad land for me now.”
